The best-value Polo Vivo on Dryv this week is the one that has barely been driven. On 30 September 2026, 2026 Vivo Life manuals with a median 6,931 km on the clock asked R249,990. Volkswagen's recommended retail price for a new Vivo Life is R294,500.

What does a used Polo Vivo cost in each year?

These are dealers' asking prices for the 106 used Vivos on Dryv on 30 September 2026. Where a year has only a handful of cars, read the price as a guide, not a rule.

Look at 2020 to 2023. The prices barely move, from R189,945 to R209,995, while the kilometres swing from 62,777 to 113,404. At that age the odometer and the service book set the price more than the year does.

Is a nearly new Vivo a better buy than a new one?

For most buyers, yes. Fifteen 2026 Vivo Life manuals were listed, with a median of 6,931 km, and the median asking price was R249,990. The cheapest was R244,990 with 11,299 km. A new Vivo Life manual (the 63kW model) is R294,500 at Volkswagen's recommended retail price, so the median nearly new one is R44,510 cheaper.

On a monthly budget that is R5,078 against R5,966, or R888 less a month for six years. The automatic follows the same pattern: three 2026 Vivo Life Tiptronics were listed at R289,900 to R299,995 with 2,693 to 9,501 km, against R326,800 for a new one.

What a new one gives you: Volkswagen's site was advertising a free two-year, 30,000 km service plan on a new Vivo Life for a limited time. On a nearly new car, ask the dealer to put in writing the date the factory warranty and any service plan end, and the kilometres left on each.

Where should a first-time buyer look?

Between the old and the nearly new there are three price bands, and they suit three different budgets.

My view: if R4,000 a month is your ceiling, the 2018 to 2023 band is where to look, and a car in it with under 100,000 km and a stamped service book is a better buy than a newer one with gaps in its history. Under R150,000 you are mostly looking at 2011 to 2017 cars, and the median one has done 130,688 km, so buy on the paperwork and an independent inspection, not on the year. Can you still find an automatic Polo Vivo?

Only just. Fourteen of the 106 used Vivos were automatic, and 92 were manual. If you need an automatic, widen your search by year rather than holding out for one in a particular colour or trim.

What should you check before you buy one?

• The trim. Some listings say only "1.4". Ask whether it is a base Vivo, a Life, a Trendline or a Comfortline, because the equipment and the price should match.
• The service book and the invoices behind it, with the dates and odometer readings lining up.
• On a 2025 or 2026 car, the start date of the warranty and service plan, in writing.
• A test drive that includes a cold start and a stretch of highway.

Monthly figures are Dryv's estimates at a typical rate of 12.75% (prime plus 2) over 72 months with no deposit, including the R1,207.50 initiation fee and the R69 monthly service fee. Verdict: if you can stretch to R250,000, buy a 2026 Vivo Life with a few thousand kilometres on it, R44,510 under new. On R200,000, buy a 2019 to 2023 Vivo with under 100,000 km and a full service book.
